Origin of the bull dogge

The Olde english bulldogge originated in England in th 1600-1700's.   These were the early ansestors of the various bulldogge breeds of today.   They were breed to take part in bull baiting.   Bull baiting was a horrible sport where they staked out a bull and let several bull dogges attack it.  A dog of great courage and agility was needed for bull baiting.

Around 1835 laws were thankfully passed to prohibit that aweful sport.  Unfortunately, this was the main purpose for the bulldogge.  Within a decade, the numbers of bulldogges dwindled to almost distinction.  Dog show fanciers decided to reconstruct the breed, but wanted to tone down the aggression and mellow out the temperment.  They crossed a pug to the original remaining stock and over the years this became known as the English bulldog.  The problem with this new breed was that they had tons of genetic health problems.

The modern Olde English Bulldogge is a reconstruction of the original Olde Bulldogge of the 17th & 18th century.  Various genetic crosses have been used in carefully and thoughtfully planned breeding programs to obtain this.  The foundation of today's Olde English Bulldogges can be traced to the: english bulldog, American bulldog, A.P.B.T., and mastiff.  These dogs were used very selectively in various combinations to obtain the desired physical and mental traits of the original Olde Bulldogge.  The result is a good looking bulldogge of great athletic ability that is much healthier than the modern english bulldog.*

Our goal as a breeder is to produce quality puppies that are: healthier, have wonderful dispositions, family friendly, and can be a protector when needed.
